July 16-22 Minnesota Trip - Day 1, Monday - Flying to Minnesota

On Monday, July 16th we flew to Minnesota – Grandma, Mommy, Daddy, Jack, and Charlie – for a little vacation. Jack was very excited to go on our trip. We had been prepping him for days, telling him that we were going on a trip to Minnesota and that we were going to fly on an airplane up in the sky with the whole family including Grandma.

When we drove up to the airport, Jack could see lots of airplanes. We parked in the ramp and took and elevator down to the terminal. Jack called it an “alligator” which made us all laugh. We took another “alligator” up to check in with our kids and a million bags. For the five of us we had 4 suitcases to check, 2 strollers to gate check, and 7 carry-ons. I was constantly counting to make sure we had everything. Just thinking about it makes me groan.

When we got to the gate, Ronny brought Jack over to the window to look at all of the airplanes around our gate area. Jack got so excited – he was almost jumping out of his skin. He was stuttering and could hardly get the words out of his mouth – “It’s airplanes! One two three four five!” Eventually he calmed down and would just sit and watch the airplanes.

If only Jack would have been happy watching TV for longer than 10 seconds...

After we got to Minnesota, we made our way down to the baggage claim and I took Jack to a neighboring carousel to see the suitcases coming down the conveyer belt to the carousel. He thought that was pretty cool. Eventually our bags started coming down, so I took him back to our carousel. Ronny collected all of our bags and it was time to go and Jack had a little meltdown. He screamed when I picked him up to take him away from baggage claim. He screamed, “More suitcases!!!” Everyone looked at us and I said, “He wants to stay and see more suitcases.” A mom with older kids said with an understanding look, “I’ve been there!” I bet she has!

We made our way along the “Rental Car” signs and eventually had to take a little tram to the rental car area. We told Jack it was a choo choo train and boy did he get excited. It was a short fun trip. Then after we hit the rental car desk, we took a little bus to get our rented minivan. With trips on an airplane, a train, and a bus – not to mention all of the elevators – and I think this may have been the best day in Jack’s life. The kid seems to have energy that won’t quit. We didn’t get to Grandma’s house until about 10pm and he was still going strong. Both kids were. We got the room set up with beds and clean sheets for the kids and finally got everyone to bed around 10:30.

July 16-22 Minnesota Trip - Day 2, Tuesday - Happy Birthday Espen

On Tuesday afternoon, after failed nap attempts for Jack and Espen, Holly, Ryan and Espen came over to play and have a little birthday celebration for Espen who had turned 2 the day before. We hadn’t seen Espen since he was about 9 months old in April 2006. He was just a baby like Charlie then and now he is a little boy with lots of personality. The boys just played and played.

These two look they are up to no good, don't they?

July 16-22 Minnesota Trip - Day 3, Wednesday - Busy morning

I found this great little playhouse on sale at Target. Espen loved throwing all the toys (and Grandma’s stuffed loons) into the playhouse and Jack loved throwing everything out of the playhouse.

The wicked witch of the East was here...

On Wednesday, Ronny had a morning teleconference that went from 9am until noon. When Charlie woke up from his nap around 10am, the rest of us headed up to IKEA to meet with Holly and Espen. We went around the upper level and then had a nice lunch in the cafeteria. We finished up below and Charlie was starting to fuss, so we headed home. Grandma convinced Holly to stay and hang out with us for the afternoon since Espen probably wouldn’t take a nap at home anyway. The boys played all afternoon again.

Espen makes a series of funny faces that we enjoyed over and over again. Super cute!

July 16-22 Minnesota Trip - Day 4, Thursday - The Como Zoo

Today was a very fun day. We always start our activities after Charlie’s morning nap and this morning we headed out to the Como Zoo. Grandma and I hadn’t been there in ages. It is a nice, cheap, compact zoo that isn’t too far away. We made it there around 11:30 and left around 1. We saw sea lions, orangutans, monkeys, gorillas, polar bears, fish, penguins, puffins, an ostrich, bison, lions, a leopard, a cougar, giraffes, and zebras. Once again Charlie started complaining a bit near the end. It is understandable, though. He just learned to crawl and we have been spending far too much time in the stroller for his likes.

One of the most exciting things for me at the zoo was the fact that they still had MOLD-A-RAMA machines. They are injection plastic molding machines that make you a little figurine before your very eyes. I remember them from my childhood and there they were – in their glory. I just couldn’t help from buying a polar bear. I really wanted the gorilla (buyer’s remorse). Oh well, maybe next time.

July 16-22 Minnesota Trip - Day 4, Thursday - Going to the ice cream shop

We had an early dinner and took the stroller brigade to a local ice cream shop that just opened this past winter while Grandma was in Houston. It was lots of fun. Everyone enjoyed the ice cream including Charlie.

July 16-22 Minnesota Trip - Day 6, Saturday - Mall of America 1

Today we went to the Mall of America. The first ride we put Jack on was the classic coin-operated pony. He was not amused. I have several pictures of him with a not-amused look on his face, but somehow convinced him to smile for the one you see here.

We also saw this great little coin operated airplane that Jack sat it when he was Charlie’s age. Very cute.

This one is from two years ago with Jack.

July 16-22 Minnesota Trip - Day 6, Saturday - Mall of America 2

We rode some real rides too including the merry-go-round. My camera isn’t fast enough for Grandma to get a good shot. I've also posted a picture of us two years ago. Funny that we ended up on the same lion.

Ronny and Jack rode in the big rigs too. Ronny thought Jack would be too scared to ride up front by himself, but Jack knew EXACTLY where he wanted to ride. Ronny got a bit scared in back by himself.

July 16-22 Minnesota Trip - Day 6, Saturday - Video at Espen's house

We went to drop Grandma off to babysit Espen and visit with Hobey & Lady – the dogs. Jack was very funny. He liked the dogs, but they made him a little nervous whenever they got close. The video shows his reaction.

July 16-22 Minnesota Trip - Day 6, Saturday - A visit from Jen

Jen came over to visit and spend some time with the boys. She brought a great fire truck puzzle for Jack and a super cute wooden helicopter for Charlie. After dinner, we walked down to the ice cream shop and had a treat. The boys got good and messy.

This is a gleeful Espen at 10pm when he was supposed to be in bed. I just love those rosy cheeks.

July 16-22 Minnesota Trip - Day 7, Sunday - Going Home

This morning the boys played while we finished packing up before heading back to the airport and back to Texas. Yesterday Jack started mentioning “Jack’s house” out of the blue. I guess that means he is ready to go home. I’m not ready to leave, though. I could use another week of playing in Minnesota with its cooler temperature, lower humidity, and clean air – not to mention our great family and friends. Goodbye Minnesota!
